The First Year: A Gentle Guide to Anniversaries

The calendar becomes a different map

After loss, certain dates take on a weight they never had before. A due date. The day you said goodbye. A season that will forever belong to a child who isn't here.

These dates are not enemies. They are invitations to remember — and remembering, however painful, is an act of love.

Plan for gentleness

  • Tell someone. Let one person know the date is coming. You don't have to carry it silently.
  • Choose a ritual. A walk. A flower. A moment of quiet. Something that belongs to you and your child.
  • Lower expectations. Cancel what you can. The world will wait.

When the day arrives

Be tender with yourself. If tears come, let them. If numbness comes, let that too. There is no right way to move through an anniversary — only your way.

And when the day passes, know this: you held the light again. One more year of remembering. One more year of love that refused to fade.
